District
Partnerships
The Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District may at
times be involved in projects with others agencies. The following
list briefly describes some of those agencies and the capacity in which we
cooperate with them. Click on each agency to find out more about their
mission.
-
Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) - Formerly the Soil
Conservation Service within the USDA, NRCS and the District work
cooperatively on projects such as installing best management practices on
farms including, but not limited to barnyard runoff management systems,
grassed waterways, waste storage structures, silage leachate collection
systems, and milkhouse wastewater treatment systems. Other projects
include Graze NY, stream restoration, and wetlands.
-
New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) - Many
nonpoint source pollution control projects require permits from the NYS DEC,
especially if the project involves stream restoration work. This state
agency is also credited with providing funding for some projects.
-
Cornell
Cooperative Extension (CCE) - Throughout
the year, the District participates in several programs sponsored by Cornell
Cooperative Extension. In the spring, the District assists with
Environmental Appreciation Days where elementary school classes in the
County are instructed in various environmental and natural resource topics
by area agencies and organizations. The District also participates in
Farm City Day held in August and organized by CCE. Other committees
and functions that the District participates in with CCE are the Cayuga Lake
Watershed Agricultural Committee, Cayuga Lake Watershed Management Plan
Development, Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, Water Resources
Council of Tompkins County, Fall Creek Watershed Committee, and the
Trumansburg Fair.
-
South
Central NY Resource, Conservation and Development (RC&D) - "The
RC&D program is a USDA program, administered by the Natural Resources
Conservation Service. The South Central RC&D Council is made up of
representatives from the twelve member County Legislatures and Soil &
Water Conservation Districts from the following counties: Broome, Cayuga,
Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Onondaga, Otsego, Schoharie,
Sullivan, Tioga, and Tompkins. The mission of the South Central
RC&D is to "improve the region's rural economic development
climate through the wise use of available natural resources."
