Erosion
The Tompkins County SWCD can provide limited technical assistance and advice to landowners who are having erosion problems on their property. Erosion is naturally caused by water and wind movement over unsecured sediment or soil; human activity can greatly increase rates of erosion. Because Tompkins County is particularly hilly, and creeks and streams are abundant, water caused sediment or soil erosion can be a real problem, especially during periods of high precipitation. The District has been very involved with several stream bank stabilization projects over the last several years and is in the process of implementing some new stream restoration techniques (e.g., bio-remediation) throughout the county. If you are having erosion problems on your property and would like some advice, please contact us and ask to speak with our District Technician.
